Common Tile Cleaning Mistakes

Avoid These Common Mistakes When Cleaning Tiles

Tile floors and grout surfaces are generally durable and easy to clean. However, some people make tiled floor and grout cleaning mistakes that can lead to an unsightly appearance or even permanent damage to the tiled floors and grout. Here are the most common cleaning mistakes to avoid.

USING DIRTY MOP WATER

The most common mistake is wet mopping instead of damp mopping. Dirty mop water can seep into the porous surface of grout lines and unglazed tiles, causing stains. It’s recommended to damp mop and change the mop water frequently.

COLOURED CLEANERS

Coloured cleaners should be used with caution. They can stain unglazed tile floors because the surface is porous and can absorb dye from the cleaning agent.

HARSH CHEMICALS

Avoid using muriatic acid, bleach, and other harsh chemicals for routine cleaning and care of your tile floors and grout floors and surfaces. These chemicals can be dangerous and cause severe burns or respiratory problems. The vaporous fumes can also damage plumbing fixtures and appliances. Harsh chemicals can also cause premature deterioration of grout lines, especially if the grout lines are alkaline and the chemical is acidic.

ABRASIVES

Steel wool, metal scouring pads, abrasive powders, and abrasive tools can cause permanent scratches and stains and ruin a glossy finish. These should be avoided when cleaning your tile surfaces.

WAXES, OILS, AND SEALERS

Waxes and wax-based cleaning products may offer temporary protection against stains, odours, and wear, but they pose problems and may increase maintenance costs. Oil-based cleaners can also pose a risk of slip and fall accidents. Sealers can be tricky and should only be applied by professional tile and grout cleaners.
