What Sandstone Restoration Actually Involves
Sandstone behaves nothing like marble, and treating it as though it does is the most common way it gets damaged. Sandstone is porous and comparatively soft. It weathers rather than wears, and it will not take a polish. Pushing a marble abrasive sequence across a sandstone wall or step removes the weathered skin of the stone and leaves it worse than it started.
What sandstone responds to is careful cleaning at the correct pressure and chemistry, repair of spalling and eroded sections, repointing where mortar has failed, and a breathable sealer that defends against weathering without trapping moisture inside the stone. Every job starts with an assessment, because the right method depends on the stone, its age, its exposure and what has already been done to it.

Sandstone Cleaning, Repair, Repointing and Sealing
Sandstone cleaning. Biological growth, traffic film, carbon staining and salt deposits all come off differently. Pressure that is safe on one facade will erode another. We test an area first, then work at the lowest pressure and mildest chemistry that will actually shift the soiling.
Sandstone repair. Spalling, delamination, eroded arrises and broken steps are repaired with colour-matched mortars, or by cutting out and piecing in new stone where the loss is too deep to fill. The aim is a repair that reads as part of the wall rather than a patch.
Repointing. Failed mortar is usually why water is getting into the stone in the first place. Old joints are raked out and repointed with a mortar softer than the stone, so the mortar sacrifices itself rather than the sandstone.
Sealing. A breathable, penetrating sealer slows water ingress and salt movement while still letting the wall dry out. Film-forming coatings do the opposite and are a common cause of blown faces on Sydney sandstone.

Why Sandstone Cannot Be Treated Like Marble
Marble is dense and takes a polish. Sandstone is porous, softer and holds its character in a weathered surface that took a century to form. The abrasive sequences, chemicals and pressures that produce a good result on a marble floor will strip, scar or blow the face off sandstone.

Can sandstone be polished?
No. Sandstone is porous and comparatively soft, and it will not hold a polish the way marble or granite does. Attempting it removes the weathered surface and leaves an uneven, unnatural finish. What sandstone responds to is cleaning, repair, repointing and a breathable sealer.
How do you clean sandstone without damaging it?
By testing first. We trial a small area to find the lowest pressure and mildest chemistry that will actually shift the soiling, then work to that. High-pressure water on aged sandstone erodes the surface and drives moisture into the wall, which is why so much damage we are called to repair started as a cleaning job.
What is repointing and does my sandstone wall need it?
Repointing is raking out failed mortar joints and replacing them. If your joints are crumbling, hollow-sounding or have been patched with hard cement mortar, the wall is almost certainly taking water. The replacement mortar should be softer than the stone so it wears in preference to the sandstone.
Should sandstone be sealed?
Usually yes, with a breathable penetrating sealer that slows water and salt movement while still letting the stone dry. Film-forming coatings trap moisture behind the face of the stone and are a common cause of spalling on Sydney sandstone.
