Most Chipped and Cracked Benchtops Can Be Repaired
A chip on the edge of a sink cut-out or a crack across a narrow section of an island looks like the end of the benchtop. It almost never is. Replacing a stone benchtop means templating, fabrication, removing the old top, disconnecting plumbing and waiting weeks. A repair is done in place, in your kitchen or bathroom, and the bench stays where it is.
The damage we repair most often sits in the same few places: along sink and cooktop cut-outs, on bullnose and mitred edges, on the exposed corners of islands and returns, and across the narrow strips of stone at the front and back of a cut-out where cracks tend to start.

Chip, Crack, Scratch and Seam Repairs
Chipped edges. Usually along the sink cut-out, the cooktop cut-out or a bullnose edge. The chip is filled with a colour-matched resin, shaped back to the profile of the edge and refinished so it sits flush with the surrounding stone.
Chipped and broken corners. Island ends and returns take the knocks. Missing sections are rebuilt and reshaped to match the original corner.
Cracks. Most often around a sink or cooktop, where the stone is at its narrowest. The crack is cut out, filled and stabilised so it does not keep travelling.
Scratches. Honed out completely rather than filled, because they sit in the surface layer of the stone.
Failed seams. Joins that have opened up or discoloured can be cut out and rejoined.
Where the damage is surface wear rather than a chip or crack, such as etch rings, dullness and stains on marble, that is marble benchtop restoration, and for floors, walls and steps see stone repairs.

Engineered Stone Benchtops
Engineered and reconstituted stone behaves differently to natural stone and there is less that can be done with it. Many chips and cracks can still be filled and colour-matched, but we will be straight with you about how close the result will be before we start.

Can a chipped stone benchtop be repaired without replacing it?
In most cases, yes. Chips along edges, sink cut-outs and corners are filled with a colour-matched resin, shaped and refinished in place. Replacement is only worth considering when the stone is badly broken or the damage is extensive.
Will the repair be visible?
It depends on the stone. On veined, speckled or busy stone a well-matched repair is usually very hard to find. On a plain solid colour a close look may still pick it up. We will tell you what to expect for your benchtop before we start.
Can you fix a crack beside the sink or cooktop?
Yes. This is the most common place for cracks, because the stone is at its narrowest there. The crack is cut out, filled and stabilised so it does not keep travelling, then the surface is refinished.
Do you repair engineered stone benchtops?
Yes, but engineered stone behaves differently to natural stone and there is less that can be done with it. Many chips and cracks can still be filled and colour-matched. We will be upfront about how close the result will be.
Can I send a photo before booking?
Yes, and it helps. A clear photo of the damage, plus one of the whole benchtop, usually tells us enough to give you an honest answer and an idea of cost before anyone comes out.
Do you also restore dull or etched marble benchtops?
Yes. Etch rings, dullness and stains on marble are surface wear rather than chips or cracks, and are handled through marble benchtop restoration. Both can be done in the same visit.
