Every floor is different, so we start with an assessment, checking the filler, the surface condition, and how the stone has worn.
From there, the process depends on what’s needed. Holes are cleaned out and refilled where necessary. The surface is honed to remove wear and bring back an even finish. If you prefer a polished result, we take it further. If you’d rather keep it honed, we leave it there.
Once the stone is restored, we seal it. Travertine is porous, and a good penetrating stone sealer gives you time to clean up spills before they become stains.

Travertine restoration finishes the stone in two ways. Filled, where the natural holes are levelled with a colour-matched compound for a smoother surface. Or unfilled, where the voids are left open for a more textured, rustic look.
Most floors we see were installed filled, but over time, that filler wears down or comes loose. Part of the restoration is deciding whether to refill or leave some texture exposed.

Travertine Restoration: Cleaning and Sealing
A good deal of travertine we look at does not need refinishing at all. It needs a proper clean and a working sealer.
Travertine is porous by nature, as the Natural Stone Institute notes and its surface is full of small voids, which is exactly where dirt ends up. Domestic mopping pushes that soil into the holes rather than lifting it out, and detergent residue builds up on top of it. The floor gradually goes grey and flat, and no amount of ordinary cleaning shifts it because the dirt is no longer sitting on the surface.
Travertine restoration cleaning uses the right alkalinity for the stone and mechanical agitation with extraction, so the soil comes out of the voids instead of being redistributed. On a floor that is otherwise sound, this alone can be transformative.
Sealing is the step that keeps it that way. An impregnating sealer sits below the surface and slows absorption, buying you time when something spills. It will not stop a cleaner that is too acidic from etching the stone, so the cleaning products you use still matter, but it is the difference between a spill you wipe up and a stain you live with. How often it needs redoing depends on the stone, the traffic and what the floor gets cleaned with, and we will give you a realistic interval for your floor rather than a number off a bottle.
Travertine Restoration Repairs: Chips, Scratches and Lost Filler
Travertine damage tends to fall into a few familiar categories:
- Filler that has dropped out. The most common issue by far. Factory filler shrinks, cracks and eventually falls out, leaving open holes that collect dirt and catch on bare feet. We refill with a colour-matched resin or cement filler and level it back.
- Scratches and traffic wear. Removed by honing back past the depth of the damage, the same as on marble or limestone.
- Chipped edges and corners. Filled, shaped and refinished so the repair reads as part of the stone.
- Etch marks. Travertine is a calcite stone, so acidic spills and the wrong cleaners burn the surface exactly as they do on marble. These are refinished out, not cleaned off.
- Absorbed stains. Oil, rust and plant water sit below the surface and are drawn back out with a poultice rather than scrubbed at.
- Cloudy or hazy patches. Usually a failed topical coating or detergent film rather than damage. If that is what we find, we will tell you, because stripping and cleaning is a much smaller job than refinishing.
Travertine Restoration Beyond the Floor
Floors are the bulk of our travertine work, but the stone turns up all over a house and the same methods apply.
Bathrooms and wet areas. Travertine walls, shower bases and vanity tops suffer from soap residue, hard water marking and cleaners that are far too aggressive for the stone. Honing and resealing usually brings them back.
Benchtops and vanities. Less common than marble but not rare. Handled with smaller equipment and more hand work.
Stairs, sills and skirting. Slower work than open floors and generally done by hand.
Outdoor travertine and pool surrounds. External travertine is usually left unfilled and honed or tumbled for grip, and the right approach there is cleaning and sealing rather than polishing. Putting a gloss on an outdoor surface makes it slippery, so we would talk you out of it.
What Travertine Restoration Sydney Costs
We quote per job after an on-site look, and the assessment is free. On travertine the things that change the number are:
- How much filling is needed. A floor with widespread open holes is a substantially bigger job than one with a handful.
- Old coatings. Acrylic sealers and waxes have to be stripped first, and some are far more stubborn than others.
- Whether you want it honed or polished. Polishing adds steps.
- Filled or unfilled finish. Two different jobs, two different prices.
- Area and access. Open floors are efficient. Bathrooms, stairs and rooms full of fixed joinery are not.
If a clean and reseal will get you most of the way there, we will quote that instead of the full restoration. It happens more often than you might expect, and it is a considerably cheaper answer.

How do I fix stains or marks caused by the wrong cleaner on travertine?
Acidic cleaners etch the surface, and what looks like a stain is often physical damage to the stone.
This can’t be wiped or scrubbed away. The affected area needs to be honed back to remove the etching and then repolished to match the surrounding floor.
Do the natural holes in travertine need to be filled before polishing?
It depends on the look you want.
If your floor was installed filled and the filler has worn or come loose, we’d typically refill before honing. If it were left unfilled for a more rustic finish, we could restore it that way. We’ll assess what suits the floor and your preference.
What's the safest way to clean and maintain polished travertine so it stays glossy?
Can I polish travertine floors myself, or will I ruin them?
DIY kits don’t offer the control or range of abrasives needed to work travertine evenly. It’s easy to create swirl marks, uneven patches, or push filler out of the holes.
Most DIY attempts we see end up costing more to correct than having it done properly in the first place.
Why does my travertine floor look cloudy or hazy after mopping?
Mopping removes surface dirt, but it won’t fix dullness caused by wear or product buildup. If your floor looks hazy even when clean, the issue is usually residue from the wrong cleaner sitting on the surface, or the finish itself has worn down.
