Stone We Hone

Marble, travertine, and other natural stones lose surface uniformity over time. Honing levels the stone accurately, without removing more material than the job requires.

What Stone Honing Does

It’s a grinding process. Diamond abrasives work across the stone surface, removing shallow damage and bringing it back to a flat, even plane. The finish that results is matte or satin, not polished. People often conflate the two, which is usually how a surface ends up worse after a well-intentioned attempt to fix it.

Most homeowners call after the floor has started looking dull in patches despite regular cleaning. Or after scratches that won’t respond to anything. Nine times out of ten, that’s a honing problem, not a cleaning one.

The material changes everything. Marble under abrasion behaves differently to travertine, and limestone needs considerably less pressure than granite before the surface starts to respond. Starting at the wrong grit is where most DIY attempts go wrong. The micro-scratches it leaves don’t appear straight away. They show up weeks later, under raking light, once the job is done and paid for.

Sydney residential work makes up the bulk of it. Marble benchtops and travertine floors are the most frequent candidates. Commercial spaces, particularly high-traffic hospitality fitouts, tend to need attention more regularly because foot traffic accelerates surface wear in ways that domestic use doesn’t.

When Honing Is the Right Treatment

Polish doesn’t fix what’s underneath it. That’s usually how people find out, a polishing job that left the scratches more visible than before anything was done.

Honing works on the surface itself, not the layer above it. Polish builds sheen but doesn’t alter what’s underneath. On a stone that’s already scratched or uneven, it catches the light across those imperfections rather than concealing them. The sequence matters: honing first, polishing after if polish is needed at all.

Etching is worth separating out here. It presents as a dull, cloudy patch that most people clean over repeatedly because it looks like a stain. It isn’t. Acid contact with lemon juice is a common cause, as are certain household cleaners. They don’t stain the stone; they change its surface chemistry. Marble and limestone are particularly susceptible because of their calcium content. No cleaning product touches it. Honing removes the damaged layer.

A scratched surface, or one that looks inconsistent in raking light despite regular cleaning, is where honing belongs in the process. Whether it’s the only step needed or the first of several comes down to what the assessment finds.

Stone We Hone

Natural stone varies in hardness, porosity, and how it responds to abrasion. The abrasive sequence used on marble won’t be right for sandstone. Material dictates method, that’s why assessment comes before any work starts.

Indoor Stone

Marble and travertine account for most indoor honing work, benchtops, floor tiles, and bathroom surfaces that show etching or uneven wear over time. Limestone and granite are less porous but still require the correct grit sequence. Getting it wrong leaves marks that are only visible later, in raking light.

Outdoor Stone

Bluestone and sandstone are common in Sydney's outdoor settings. The concern outdoors is usually different, such as weathering, surface roughness, or a slip hazard on a pool surround or front entry. Outdoor stone has typically been through more stress, so the assessment matters more before any abrasive work begins.

Unsure Where to Start?

Stone problems aren’t always straightforward to read. What looks like a stain is often etching. What looks like it needs polishing usually needs honing first. A free on-site assessment takes the guesswork out; we confirm what the surface actually needs before anything is quoted.

FAQs

Here are some common questions about our stone care services.

What is the difference between stone honing and stone polishing?

They’re not the same process, and they don’t produce the same result. Honing uses diamond abrasives to level the stone, removing shallow scratches and correcting surface irregularities.

Polishing comes after, once the surface is already flat, to build sheen. The issue is that most people reach for polish first. On a stone that’s scratched or uneven, that’s the wrong call. Polish catches the light across those imperfections rather than hiding them. The surface ends up looking worse than it did before anything was done. Whether honing alone is needed or both in sequence is what the on-site assessment works out.

A honed finish is matte or satin. In most residential settings, that’s actually safer underfoot than a high-gloss polish. For wet areas or commercial floors, the finish level gets specified before work starts; it’s part of the job brief, not an afterthought.

There’s no single answer; it depends on how the floor is used and what goes on it after honing.

In a residential setting, marble or travertine honed correctly and sealed afterwards can hold its finish for several years. Commercial spaces with consistent foot traffic need attention more frequently. The sealer applied after honing makes a meaningful difference to longevity either way.

Technically yes. The results are a different matter. Consumer pads don’t replicate the weight or grit control of professional machinery; uneven pressure leaves scratches that aren’t visible until the light hits at the right angle. Correcting that means removing more material and starting the sequence again. It’s a more expensive problem to fix than the original one.
Sometimes, but the distinction matters. Etching looks like a stain but isn’t. It’s acid damage to the stone surface, and honing removes it because the damage is physical, not absorbed. An actual stain that’s penetrated below the surface is a different problem. That typically needs poulticing or sealing, not abrasive work. The site visit separates the two before any treatment is recommended.

Ready to Hone Your Stone?

Most people contact us after something else has already been tried. A rental machine that didn’t produce results, or a cleaning product that made the etching noticeably worse. By that point, the stone still needs honing; it just needs more of it.

Starting with a free on-site assessment avoids that. We look at the stone, identify what’s actually happening at the surface level, and confirm whether honing is the right treatment before anything is quoted or scheduled. If polishing or sealing is needed alongside it, that gets factored in upfront.

Over 20 years of work across Sydney homes and commercial spaces. Trained technicians on every job. No mess left on completion.

If the surface isn’t right, we’d rather tell you that at the assessment than after the invoice.

We only ever use professional-grade cleaning equipment for cleaning and restoring natural damaged stone surfaces.

Proper cleaning ensures that the subsequent steps—like honing or polishing—are done on a surface free of debris, allowing for a truly flawless finish without scratches or imperfections left behind on the completion phase.

We go every step to ensure that before we commence polishing, your surfaces are 100% spotless from imperfections. This just ensures a shine that is just pure glass.

Stone Sealing & Protection

The final pass is always about protecting the achieved flawless finish and ensuring it lasts for as long as possible, considering the foot traffic which will be using your surfaces. The final pass is a protective sealant. This protective sealant is applied to guard against future spills, stains, and wear. Sealing helps maintain the newly restored finish and makes routine cleaning easier. Our advanced sealers are designed to penetrate the pores of each stone type, providing long-lasting defence against moisture and contaminants your stone surfaces may experience throughout their lifetime.
